Groundwater Depletion
Of the 2.4 percent of the world’s water that is fresh, nearly 90 percent is tied up in glaciers, ice caps and snowfields. After glaciers, the next largest reservoir of fresh water is held in the ground as groundwater. Groundwater is the source of nearly 40 percent of the fresh water for agricultural and domestic use in the United States. Nearly half of all Americas and about 95 of the rural population depend on groundwater for drinking and other domestic purposes. Overuse of these supplies causes several kinds of problems, including the drying up of wells and natural springs and the disappearance of surface water features such as wetlands, rivers, and lakes.
